New Draft signings!

For Immediate Release                                                                                                                                   Monday, June 22, 2009

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox announced today that the club has signed 11 players selected in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, including right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson (2nd round), outfielder Seth Schwindenhammer (5th round) and right-hander Jeremiah Bayer (30th round), a native of Greenfield, MA.  Additionally, Boston has signed three non-drafted free agents.  Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Jason McLeod made the announcement.

Wilson, the 77th overall selection out of Texas A&M University, went 6-6 with a 4.22 ERA (42 ER/89.2 IP) and two saves in 24 appearances, including eight starts in 2009.  The 6-1, 205-pound junior limited opponents to a .237 average (80-for-337) and fanned a team-high 120 batters compared to just 25 walks, earning an All-Big 12 honorable mention.

Taken in the fifth round out of Limestone Community High School (IL), Schwindenhammer combined for 28 home runs and 98 RBI over his junior and senior years.

Bayer earned 2009 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division III Pitcher of the Year and National Pitcher of the Year honors after going 12-1 with a 0.85 ERA (9 ER/95.1 IP), 94 strikeouts and 24 walks over 14 outings (11 starts) as a senior at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.

The club has also signed three non-drafted free agents: shortstop Drew Dominguez out of Wesleyan University (CT), catcher Sean Killeen from Trinity College (CT) and right-handed pitcher Chez Angeloni out of Johns Hopkins University (MD).

Great job in building the farm. Hope you can get bay inked for the long haul. Hope you just eat all of Lugo’s money and let him leave as soon as Lowrie is healthy. SOOOO! glad Clay and Els Lowrie and whoever else didn’t get traded for Hanley Cause he isn’t worth it. Lineup has a good balance to it would like to see Kottaras get an extra start per week against a right handed pitcher. Good deal keeping Kotsay. Bench has really done a great job in june as youk Lowell tek and peddie have all struggled this month all hitting 220 or lower but I’m sure you already know that Please Please don’t let Tito change the order as drew and els are thriving where they are

    Hi, Insider…

My husband and I will be in Boston on vacation and would love to take a Fenway Park tour while we are in town. I just read the info on getting tickets. Do you have any insights on the best time to call for tickets (how far in advance)?

We are also attending the games on 7/24 and 7/25. We’re EXCITED!
