Another Yaz, and 19 other Sox Draft Picks!

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today concluded their participation in Major League Baseball’s 2009 First-Year Player Draft with 20 additional selections in rounds 31-50.  Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Jason McLeod made the announcement.

Over three days of the draft, Boston selected 26 pitchers (20 right-handers, 6 left-handers), 11 infielders, 11 outfielders and two catchers.  Of the 50 players drafted, 27 are from high school and 23 from college.

Among today’s picks was outfielder Michael Yastrzemski, the grandson of Red Sox legend and Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.  Selected in the 36th round out of St. John’s Prep in Danvers, MA, Yastrzemski hit .368 (28-for-76) with 18 RBI and nine stolen bases in 24 games this year.  He posted a .505 on-base percentage while leading his team with 28 runs scored and five outfield assists.

The Red Sox selected two additional players today with Major League ties.  Gavin McCourt was taken in the 39th round out of Harvard-Westlake High School (CA) where he was an all-league outfielder.  McCourt’s father, Frank, is the Owner and Chairman of the Los Angeles Dodgers and his mother, Jamie, is the Chief Executive Officer.  With its 45th-round selection, Boston picked first baseman Kyle Arnsberg out of Arlington Lamar High School.  He is the son of former Major League pitcher and current Blue Jays pitching coach Brad Arnsberg.

The club’s 49th pick was third baseman Chris Constantino from Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, RI.  Constantino’s team is playing in the Rhode Island Class A State Baseball Championship tonight at McCoy Stadium, the home of Boston’s Triple-A Pawtucket club.  Red Sox outfielder Rocco Baldelli was a first-round pick by Tampa Bay out of Bishop Hendricken in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft.

Nice draft choices. Now please sign Jason Bay for at least 4 more years & sign Catcher Alex Trezza! He’d be the next Tek if you’d give him a shot!
I love to watch Tek making a HUGE comeback this year! I know he could do it.
    One more thing Papi’s back!
