RED SOX ROOKIE PROGRAM AUTOGRAPH SESSION
SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY, JANUARY 18 AT BEST BUY FENWAY
Players Participating in 2010 Red Sox Rookie Program Expected To Attend Signing, which will benefit the Red Sox Foundation
BOSTON, MA--An autograph session with participants of the 2010 Red Sox Rookie Program will take place on Monday, January 18 from 3:30 until 5:00 p.m. at Best Buy Fenway located in the Landmark Center on 401 Park Drive, Boston MA. Best Buy is the Official Consumer Electronics Retailer of the Boston Red Sox.
The signing will benefit the Red Sox Foundation and for a donation of $10.00 to the Foundation, fans will have the opportunity to receive autographs from Boston's top upper level prospects. The players are taking part in the Red Sox 2010 Rookie Program, a two-week session designed to expose the players to the expectations of being in the major leagues for the Red Sox.
The autograph session will be open to fans of all ages on a first come, first served basis. There will be a limit of one autograph of each player attending per person. Fans are requested to bring their own items to have signed.
The players attending the Rookie Program who are expected to take part in the autograph session are:
Casey Kelly, RHP - Boston's 2009 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, the 20-year-old right-hander was named a South Atlantic League All-Star and represented the U.S. Team in the 2009 All-Star Futures Game. Boston's first overall selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, Kelly ranks as the No. 2 prospect, No. 1 pitcher, in the Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America.
Randor Bierd, RHP - Bierd went 3-1 with a 4.55 ERA (31 ER/61.1 IP) in 25 appearances (seven starts) at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2009, his first season in the Red Sox organization after being acquired from the Orioles last January. He participated in the Arizona Fall League and led Mesa in wins (three), starts (seven) and innings pitched (25.1).
Felix Doubront, LHP - Doubront spent the 2009 season with Double-A Portland, going 8-6 in a club-high 26 starts. He finished second in the Eastern League in ERA (3.35), fourth among league starters in strikeouts per nine innings (7.51) and fifth in opponent average (.255).
Luis Exposito, C - A 31st-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Exposito combined to hit .287 (109-for-380) with nine home runs and 57 RBI between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland, posting career-highs with 29 doubles and 27 walks.
Jose Iglesias, SS - Signed by the Red Sox on August 22, Iglesias currently ranks as the No. 9 prospect, No. 7 position player and best defensive infielder in the Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America. He played 75 games for los Vaqueros de La Habana of Cuba's major league Serie Nacional during the 2007-08 season, batting .322 (101-for-314) with 11 doubles, four triples and 39 RBI.
Ryan Kalish, OF - Boston's 2009 Minor League Offensive Player of the Year, Kalish combined to hit .279 (141-for-506) while setting career-highs with 18 home runs and 77 RBI between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland. He hit .301 (22-for-73) with one homer and 15 RBI in 21 games in the Arizona Fall League and is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 5 prospect, No. 4 position player, in the Red Sox farm system.
Che-Hsuan Lin, OF - Lin was named to the Carolina League's year-end All-Star Team and ranked third in the Red Sox farm system with a club-high 26 stolen bases and tied for fifth in the league with a team-best 66 walks. A right-handed hitter, Lin was rated as having the best strike-zone discipline and as being the best defensive outfielder in the Red Sox system in Baseball America's 2010 Best Tools survey.
Ryne Miller, RHP - Miller, 24, tied for second among Red Sox farmhands with 10 wins, tops among organizational relievers, and was named to the California League All-Star Team after posting a 2.77 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 55.1 innings with Salem to begin the season.
Yamaico Navarro, SS - Navarro, 22, made his Double-A debut last season, combining to hit .240 (60-for-250) with 6 homers and 30 RBI between Single-A Salem, Double-A Portland and Short-Season A Lowell. He also played six games with Licey of the Dominican Winter League. The shortstop was selected as an All-Star in both 2007 (New York-Penn League) and 2008 (South Atlantic League).
Junichi Tazawa, RHP - A native of Yokohama, Japan, Tazawa made his Major League debut over the last two months of the 2009 season after signing with the Red Sox on December 3, 2008. He was named an Eastern League All-Star and represented Team World in the 2009 All-Star Futures Game. Tazawa, 23, is rated by Baseball America as the No. 6 prospect, No. 2 pitcher, in the Red Sox system.
Kyle Weiland, RHP - A six-foot-four, 195-pound right-hander, Weiland pitched for Single-A Salem in 2009 and posted a 3.46 ERA, good for seventh in the Carolina League. The right-hander also ranked fourth in the league in opponent average (.240) and second among Red Sox farmhands with 112 strikeouts.

BOSTON, MA - Tickets for the 2010 season will go on sale on December 12, 2009 online at RedSox.com, by phone and at the 7th Annual Christmas at Fenway presented by Stop and Shop, which will be held the same day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Fenway Park. Fans who go online or attend the event will have the first shot at purchasing 2010 tickets through the always popular "Sox Pax", which are four-game ticket packages with a variety of seat options, or by electing from 18 games in April and May. Tickets will continue to be on sale as long as supplies last.
As in the past several years, due to the ongoing Year IX Fenway Park Improvements, the Red Sox are unable to accommodate a large number of fans at the ballpark. Single-game ticket sales will be available online at www.redsox.com and by phone at 888-REDSOX6 beginning at 10:00 a.m. on December 12th. Fans who require ADA accessible seating may also call 877-REDSOX9. Hearing impaired fans may call the Red Sox TTY line at (617) 226-6644.
In addition, the second Great Fenway Park Yard Sale will take place the following day on Sunday, December 13th from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m. The Yard Sale will give fans the opportunity to purchase Red Sox memorabilia, collectibles and souvenirs that can become their own cherished keepsakes and unique holiday presents. The selection of items will include physical parts of the ballpark such as authentic Fenway Park bricks and signage along with other items such as game-worn paraphernalia, game programs and other miscellaneous items.
The online registration processes for both events will begin at noon tomorrow, Wednesday, December 2, 2009, and will continue through noon on Monday, December 7, 2009 on RedSox.com. Fans must register for each event individually and selections will be made separately for Saturday and Sunday event admittance; however, a selection of Yard Sale items will be available for sale on Saturday for fans selected to attend Christmas at Fenway presented by Stop and Shop.
For both events, the attendees will be selected and contacted from a pool of registrants and winners will be invited to come to Fenway during a selected time frame. Each winner will be sent an email confirmation, which includes their pre-selected arrival time. This confirmation must be presented at check-in with a photo ID for admittance to Fenway Park.
Christmas at Fenway presented by Stop and Shop will give randomly selected fans a chance to enjoy the festivities at the ballpark and a guaranteed opportunity to purchase tickets for the 2010 season. The list of ten different "Sox Pax" available for sale is attached. The single games that are available for sale include the Rays games on April 16, 17 and 18, the Ranger games on April 20, 21 and 22, the Orioles games on April 23, 24 and 25, the Angels games on May 3, 4, 5 and 6, the Blue Jays games on May 10, 11 and 12 and the games against the Twins on May 19 and 20. There is a maximum limit of two Sox Pax packages per customer of up to four tickets per package for a total of 32 tickets. Fans can also purchase a maximum of eight tickets from the single game sales with any combination of games.
The second Great Fenway Park Yard Sale presented by FW Webb will take place in the Third Base Concourse and Absolut Clubhouse. On Saturday, fans who attend Christmas at Fenway presented by Stop and Shop will have an opportunity to purchase a selection of items, including signed memorabilia from former/current players, game used jerseys and bats, framed photos and paintings, ballpark furniture, ballpark signage, and original Fenway Park bricks. On Sunday, the Yard Sale will open to fans selected through an online registration. All Yard Sale items are subject to availability and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

It'll be good to see Jon Lester on the mound tonight after the way he left his last game. I know people will be looking to see how many runs he gives up, how many strikeouts he has, and if he has any kind of limp, but I think we should all remeber how lucky we are that his leg is intact at all!
Now, that's not to say that I don't hope that he goes out and throws 6 or 7 shutout innings, but so long as he looks healthy, that's good enough for me!

Red Sox Foundation, Mass General Team Up to Help Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq Wars
New Program to Target Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury
BOSTON - The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital today will announce a multifaceted initiative aimed at helping veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who are affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Called the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, this new partnership, working in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs, will:
ยท provide diagnosis and clinical care for veterans with PTSD and TBI;
ยท offer outreach and support services to families of affected veterans;
ยท conduct innovative research to deepen the understanding of the disorders and develop better treatments for them; and
ยท educate veterans, families and health care providers about diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.
Thousands of soldiers who have returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan struggle - often silently - with PTSD and TBI, referred to as "the invisible wounds of war." According to a 2008 RAND Corporation study, one in five service members from these combat theaters suffers from depression or stress disorders, including PTSD. In addition, nearly 20 percent of veterans of these modern wars have experienced concussions or other traumatic brain injuries during their tours of duty. In total, one-fourth of returning servicemen and servicewomen will have considerable difficulty adjusting to civilian life.
These deployment-related disorders too often go undiagnosed and untreated because of the unfortunate stigma associated with the emotional and psychological scars of the combat experience. The Home Base Program seeks to reach out to veterans who have - or may have - PTSD and TBI to encourage them to get the vital care and services they need to begin the healing process.
"It takes tremendous courage for a veteran to step forward and ask for help," says John A. Parrish, MD, director of Home Base, who served as a medical officer in the Marines Corps during the Vietnam War. "In New England alone, thousands of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who may be in rough shape psychologically avoid treatment because of this stigma. You see the devastating effects of PTSD and TBI in the growing rates of unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness and suicide among veterans. Home Base is committed to rebuilding lives, restoring families and finding better ways to treat these disorders."
The idea for Home Base grew out of visits the Red Sox made to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington following the team's World Series victories in 2004 and 2007. During these visits, players, coaches and team officials met with servicemen and servicewomen afflicted with combat-related injuries, both physical and psychological. The connections between ballplayers and soldiers were powerful and poignant.
"Like many Americans, I found myself frustrated with the reality that so many of our recently returning veterans and their families are facing the additional challenge of PTSD and TBI as they're transitioning to civilian life," says Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner. "The Red Sox Foundation determined that we must find some way to use our unique position in New England to encourage those veterans to find meaningful help. We want every returning soldier, sailor or Marine who may be facing PTSD or TBI to know that Red Sox Nation respects them, cares about them and is offering a 'Home Base' where they and their families may find solutions that make their homecomings less challenging."
The Red Sox Foundation enlisted the assistance and advice of physicians from the MGH to help develop, plan and implement a program that would address some of the unmet mental health and family support needs of veterans. The late Sen. Edward Kennedy became a champion of the program and convened key officials from the Red Sox Foundation, Massachusetts General Hospital, Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense to discuss ways to coordinate with one another to serve the needs of more veterans and their families. Sen. Kennedy had been helping to shape and build Home Base for the past two years and was involved in the discussions right up until his death in late August 2009.
"From the start, Senator Kennedy saw the potential of these organizations working together to make a significant impact on the lives of so many veterans and their families in New England," says Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH. "The tremendous outreach of the Red Sox Foundation may prompt a reluctant veteran to take that all-important first step toward treatment. And when that happens, we will be ready to offer the clinical and scientific expertise of Mass. General and valuable support services to family members. These veterans, who risked their lives for our country, deserve so much more than just our profound gratitude. They deserve the very best care we can deliver and the most hope we can offer."
Slated to open early in 2010, the Home Base Clinic for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan will provide diagnostic, treatment and referral services at Mass. General and through various community resources in cooperation with a wide array of programs provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The clinical program will offer a multidisciplinary approach to care and provide opportunities for veterans to participate in cutting-edge research protocols aimed at increasing understanding of PTSD, TBI and related disorders. Mark Pollack, MD, director of the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders at MGH, serves as program leader of the Home Base Clinic.
The Home Base Family Support Program, which also will begin serving families in early 2010, will focus on helping children and spouses of military service members and veterans better cope with a parent or loved one who is experiencing serious problems adjusting and integrating into home life after deployment because of PTSD or TBI or other combat-related issues. Paula Rauch, MD, director of the Marjorie E. Korff PACT (Parenting At a Challenging Time) Program and chief of the Child Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service at the MGH, serves as leader of the Home Base Family Support Program.
The Home Base Research Program is already under way, with a wide variety of ongoing PTSD and TBI studies at the MGH moving under the Home Base banner. The research component will draw upon the collaborative model used in the Center for the Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), a consortium of hospitals, universities and other organizations in which scientists from a range of disciplines
share ideas, expertise and perspectives to find solutions to specific clinical problems. CIMIT consortium members include founding members MGH, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Draper Laboratories and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, Boston University, Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, Newton-Wellesley Hospital and VA Boston Healthcare System. Roger Pitman, MD, director of the MGH Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Psychophysiology Laboratory, is leader of the Home Base Research Program and heads up PTSD research, while Ross Zafonte, DO, chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at MGH and vice president for Medical Affairs at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, leads the TBI research effort. The Home Base Research Program will augment ongoing research collaborations among the MGH, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and the VA Boston Healthcare System.
The Home Base Education Program will offer information and training through web-based learning and on-site seminars that will broaden the network of community providers trained to care for veterans with PTSD and TBI and their families. The program will use the educational resources available through the structure of the MGH Psychiatry Academy and the MGH Academy to reach health care professionals. The educational program will also provide interactive information, materials and resources for veterans and families. The curriculum is being designed in conjunction with experts from the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at the VA Boston Healthcare System. Bob Birnbaum, MD, PhD, MGH psychiatrist and executive director of Postgraduate Medical Education, serves as Home Base Education Program leader.
The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program will be formally announced during the pre-game ceremonies of the Sept. 17 Boston Red Sox-Los Angeles Angels game. The on-field ceremony will include leadership of the Red Sox Foundation, the MGH and the Home Base Program; US Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki; and ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff, who was injured in an explosion while on assignment in Iraq; and several veterans who have publicly shared their personal experiences with PTSD and TBI.
"The coordination of the Department of Veterans Affairs' programs with those of other departments and agencies, philanthropic and volunteer organizations, and with world-class foundations and volunteer groups, is critically important," says Shinseki. "When those efforts include distinguished institutions such as the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital, veterans win."
PTSD is a debilitating condition that often follows terrifying physical or emotional experiences, causing persistent, frightening thoughts and memories, or flashbacks, of the ordeal. Common symptoms of PTSD are sleep problems, nightmares, irritability, violent outbursts, difficulty working or socializing, depression, lack of interest in activities and difficulty showing affection. TBI occurs when the brain is physically injured, which can occur in combat from the shock waves of a blast or explosion or from a sudden force that causes the brain to jolt backward and forward, hitting the skull and damaging the internal lining, tissues and blood vessels. Symptoms can include diminished motor function; impaired thinking abilities; reduced sensation; and impeded language and communication abilities.

For fans who do not have internet access, or those not selected in the online random drawing, a limited number of tickets will be set aside for purchase by telephone (while supplies last) beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 25 at (888) RED-SOX6. No tickets will be available at the
Fans with disabilities may call (877) RED-SOX9 beginning at noon on Friday, September 25 to purchase accessible seating (while supplies last). Hearing impaired patrons may call the TTY line at (617) 226-6644.
There will be a one-game, two-ticket purchase limit for each winner selected. Ticket prices for the ALDS are $130 for Field Box Seats and Loge Box Seats, $100 for Pavilion Box Seats and Right Field Box Seats, $55 for Grandstand Seats, $35 for Bleacher Seats and $30 for standing room. All orders for the American League Division Series will be subject to a $6 per-ticket convenience fee and a $15 per-order processing fee.
Registrants not selected in the ALDS drawing or those who register after 12 noon EDT on Monday, September 21 will still be eligible for the American League Championship Series and World Series drawings provided that they have selected to be included in the ticket opportunities for each respective series.

FENWAY AREA WEATHER UPDATE (As of 4:30 p.m.)
The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Meteorlogix) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for the possibility of rain showers in the area during the afternoon and evening hours.
The Fenway Park gates will open at the regularly scheduled time of 5:10 p.m., and the Red Sox are hopeful that tonight's game with Tampa Bay, which is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., will be played. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the current forecast and to the possibility of delay.
This forecast is of course subject to change as the day progresses. Additional updates will be provided as necessary.
